24 - 28 augustus 2011 - Sunbird/WINGS Dutch tour

After the 4 superb winter tours i also offered a short late summer tour to the Netherlands. Being as though this summer was the worst in living memory, with more water falling per day than in the Amazon (ok i may have made that last bit up?) we were really tested with the weather. Being now the proud owner of my new 400mm lens (the last one is still in the claims process) i decided to leave the camera in the minibus most of the time, hence the lack of photos.
But the birds were still impressive highlights included 3+ Short-toed & 3 White-tailed Eagle, 2 Honey-buzzard, 5 Goshawk, 2 Common Crane, Black Stork, Long-eared Owl, Caspian Tern, Caspian Gull, 2 Red-necked Phalaropes, 2 Spotted Crakes, Citrine Wagtail, Great Grey Shrike & found our own Red-throated Pipit & Wryneck.
Plus Black-necked Grebe, Marsh Harriers, Hobby, Peregrine, Ruddy Shelduck, Great Egrets, Spoonbills, White Stork, Garganey, Wood & Curlew Sands, Temminck’s & Little Stints, Ruff, Black Tern, Little & Yellow-legged Gulls.
Photos below of the group (notice how the sun obviously shone long enough for me to put my shorts on, while the group still had coats on!), Common Buzzard, Honey-buzzard, Great crested Grebe and, something im sure you have all missed, a poor photo of a Northern Goshawk, sat miles away....
